Do retail security signs have to meet a standard?

• Colour vs reflective — a colour-banded strip (each band 10 cm, marked 150–190 cm) reads clearly on colour cameras and lets staff describe a height by band. A reflective strip suits low light and night-mode or monochrome cameras. Many shops fit colour on the main door and reflective on after-hours entries.
• The evidence chain — incident → footage → a height read off the strip → a clear description in the police statement. That chain is far stronger than a witness guessing a number under pressure.
• Describe by band — brief staff to note “up to the blue band” rather than estimate centimetres in the moment; it's faster and more reliable.
• Align it to the camera — the strip only works if the entry camera films people against it as they leave. Check the live view after fitting and confirm the bands are legible on the recording.
