THE warning signs of driver fatigue including microsleeps and weary behaviour have been highlighted in the lead-up to the busy summer holiday season.
The Stay Fresh on the Princes Hwy campaign was launched in the region yesterday as part of a road safety initiative to encourage drivers to stop, revive and survive during their trip."Statistics show between January 2002 and December 2004 there were 14 fatigue-related crashes on the Princes Hwy, tragically resulting in 14 fatalities," Wollongong Lord Mayor Alex Darling said at the launch."Heed early warning signs such as yawning, tired or sore eyes, slow reactions, microsleeps and drowsiness and understand the risks and consequences of driving while tired."The program includes the promotion of a brochure which shows rest areas along the highway between Wollongong and Eden, where travellers can safely stop and rest, or get out of their vehicles to take a break.Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla councils set up the initiative with the help of police, the RTA and NRMA Insurance.
